Born from Finnish Roots
We're a Finnish family rooted in the Upper Midwest, raised in homes where sauna wasn't a luxury — it was simply part of life. Our heritage runs deep, and we built SISU Steamer Saunas to share it with you.

A Finnish Family, A Living Tradition
Finnish heritage runs through our family for generations. In our home, sauna wasn't a weekend treat — it was woven into the rhythm of life. Saturdays meant sauna. Holidays meant sauna. Any reason to gather meant sauna.
We raise our children the same way. From the time they were small, they've known the ritual: heat up the kiuas, breathe in the löyly, then race to the water. It is in their blood, just as it was in ours.
SISU Steamer Saunas is our way of bringing this lived tradition to others — not a recreation of something we read about, but something we practice. Real Finnish sauna, the way it has always been done.
More Than Heat — A Way of Life
The Sauna as a Healing Space
In Finland, the sauna is one of the most ancient and deeply held cultural institutions. There are over three million saunas in a country of five million people. It has been a place for childbirth, healing, meditation, and community for thousands of years.
Finnish emigrants carried this tradition with them across the world — to Canada, to Australia, and deeply into the Upper Midwest of America. Finnish miners, loggers, and farmers built saunas before they built houses. The sauna was that essential.
In 2020, Finnish sauna culture was inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The world is recognizing what Finns have always known.
Löyly, Kiuas & Sisu
Löyly — the steam that rises when water hits the hot stones. But more than steam, it is the spirit of the sauna itself. Good löyly is what separates a real Finnish sauna from anything else.
Kiuas — the wood-fired sauna stove, the heart of the sauna. Heating the kiuas is a ritual. The crackle of birch, the slow rise of temperature, the anticipation — it is all part of the experience.
Sisu — the Finnish concept of extraordinary resilience and courage. The word has no exact English equivalent. It is what drives you into cold water after a hot sauna. It is what this business is built on.
"The sauna is the poor man's pharmacy."
— Old Finnish proverb
Sauna Swimming on the Big Lake
For generations our family has practiced the ancient Finnish tradition of sauna swimming — the cycle of extreme heat followed by a cold water plunge — on the shores of Lake Superior.

Heat, Cold, and Lake Superior
On the shores of Lake Superior, our family has practiced what Finns have done for centuries: stoke the sauna to a roaring heat, breathe in the löyly, and then walk straight into the cold water of the greatest lake on earth.
Lake Superior is no gentle lake. Its waters run cold even in August, and in the quieter months they can steal your breath. That shock is the point. The contrast between heat and cold is the ancient Finnish therapy — it opens your chest, clears your mind, and reminds you that you are alive.
Our kids have grown up doing this. They run from the sauna cabin, across the sand, and into the waves without hesitation. That courage — that pure joy — is the spirit of sisu embodied. You can see it on their faces every single time.
Passing It On
This is the tradition we are passing to our children. Not as a lesson, not as a discipline — but as pure joy. They have no fear of the cold water. They compete to see who goes in longest. They flex on the beach and laugh until their sides hurt.
Finnish families have always gathered at the lake sauna. The generations sat together in the heat, talked without pretense, and then cooled off in the water. It was egalitarian — no status, no phones, no distraction. Just people, heat, and cold water.
When you rent our mobile sauna, you are not just getting a hot box. You are stepping into thousands of years of Finnish culture — lived and loved by real families, passed from generation to generation. We bring that to you, wherever you are.

— The Finnish concept of SISU
It's why our kids run into cold Lake Superior after a hot sauna. It's why Finnish immigrants thrived in the hard winters of the Upper Peninsula. It's who we are.
What We Believe
The principles that guide every sauna we bring and every experience we create.
Authenticity
We don't cut corners. Real Finnish sauna means real wood, real stones, real kiuas, and real löyly — the way we've always done it.
Community
Sauna brings people together. In the heat, there's no status, no pretense. Just people being human together.
Resilience
Sisu isn't just a name. It's what drives you into cold water after a hot sauna, and what drives us to share this tradition every single day.
